This Meeting: Boyles Hotel
Our member Peter Ryan has long been talking of the day he would have a restaurant in Boyles Hotel. That time has arrived, and it has already garnered a number of regulars. After considerable renovations to the hotel, the restaurant started up the week after our visit to Lochiel House. Chef Dean Barlow accompanied us on that B&B meeting. Dean is a young chef, who promises to try to approach the standard of Lochiel, and was inspired by that visit. He is both excited and nervous about doing a SPECIAL menu for us, and that sounds about right for a young chef who would like to extend himself. So let’s see what he can do.

Last Meeting: Peacock Trattoria

Another relatively new, and quirky establishment, that had garnered very positive reviews in the SHM amongst others. Chefs James Watson and Drew Corbel are formerly of Balmain’s award-winning gastropub the Riverview Hotel. With a full ‘Trust the Chef’ degustation menu to come, we dispensed with canapés and moved straight to the French sparkling, Louis Bouillot, Cremant de Bourgogne, Grand
Reserve, NV.

Entrées Three entrée courses were: Snapper Chowder; Crispy duck, apple, watercress, hazelnut & witlof salad with vincotto dressing; and Rosemary spindini scallops, with pancetta, bread. Accompanied by Rosabrook 2009 Chardonnay, Margaret River, WA.

Main course Lamb rump with its own moussaka, roast artichoke & gremolata. The paired masked wine selected was a Brands Laira Coonawarra Shiraz from SA, 2008. Congratulations and Horse’s A went to Ryan Turner who pretty well picked all the details of the wine, a very high score of 95% followed by Lindsay Parnell and Greg Padmore.

Dessert Pineapple ravioli, chocolate crostoli & rum glaze was accompanied by a choice Curt knew would divide opinions, and it did: El Dorado Special Reserve 12 year old rum, produced some high and some low scores – an interesting thought for something out of the ordinary though. Thanks to Curt for corralling the apologies etc for the past two meetings as I only just returned in time for this meeting, after we had set them up together before I decamped.

News Garth Young had his member’s bib presented to him, and we welcome Chris Gray into membership from this meeting.
Good decision guys.

Elections are upon us, is it time for you to take something on?

Ladies Lunch: Next meeting will be the final contender for the Ladies Lunch (probably Lochiel House, but you never know, Dean could really pull off a triumph yet). Can you please think about whether you want to continue this event, and if so, when would suit to go (assuming I can get a group in and Michael can get the bus arranged). A weekend lunch is the most likely, and Sat is easier to get space than Sun.
I will circulate a sheet at next meeting, or let me know your thoughts if not attending.

Curt York and David M
