This Meeting: Peacock Trattoria
A local hidden gem that is rapidly gaining cult status. Chefs James Watson and Drew Corbel are formerly
of Balmain’s award-winning gastro-pub the Riverview Hotel, who cook ‘generous, flavourful food that
exceeds expectations’. That quote is from the Sydney Morning Herald’s very favourable review on 28
January. We will be having the ‘Trust the Chef’ option, with 6 or 7 courses chosen from the menu by the
chef (in this case chosen with us in advance to match wines, instead of the usual ‘on the day’ spontaneity,
which can have substitutions in case of allergy or dislike of any particular course).
Last Meeting: While the Balcony Bar is only a year old, the food was favorably received by our members. Service was a
bit slow, but this was understandable when one considers the two flights of very steep and narrow stairs Susannah and her staff had to navigate to bring our food to us from the kitchen (in addition to taking care of their other customers). The service was very friendly and always accompanied with a smile.
Canapés Chicken Liver Pate was accompanied by a Cremant De Bourgogne (French Champagne) “Blanc De Blancs” from Lugny Franc.
Entrée The entrée was a tapas style selection of succulent Tempura Zucchini Flowers stuffed with brocconcini and parmesan with pea puree and lemon; Popcorn Chicken tossed in a rice flour tempura with a sweet soy mayonnaise, pepper and chilli, and; crispy Pork Belly Bites,
braised in orange, soy, and cinnamon, served on a basil leaf. The matching wine chosen for this entrée combination was a Kim Crawford 2009 Pinot Gris, from Marlborough, NZ.
Main course The Pan Fried Snapper was accompanied with celeriac puree, dutch carrots, lemon capers beurre noisette. The paired masked wine selected was a Wood Park 2008 Pinot Noir from Milawa, VIC. Congratulations goes to Michael Durkin who won the famed Horses Arse.
Dessert Summer Berry Pudding with crème Anglaise and vanilla crème Chantilly was paired with a Brown Brothers 2010 (late harvest) Orange
Muscat & Flora from Milawa, VIC.
As a surprise for our club, Curt introduced Severine Chomat, Brand Ambassador for Chateau Du Tariquet, from Eauze, France. Severine
presented their new product called L’idee Folle Vin De Liqueur. Members were treated with a glass of this ‘first-ever in Australia’, L’idee
Folle Vin De Liqueur.
